Phu My An
Building the Brand for Hue's Future Cultural District
The OpportunityHue has always been a city remembered for its past.Home to Vietnam's Imperial Citadel, royal tombs, centuries-old architecture, and one of the country's richest culinary traditions, it attracts millions of visitors every year. Yet despite its remarkable cultural assets, tourism in Hue has historically been centered around daytime heritage experiences, leaving significant opportunities for economic growth after sunset.Phu My An was conceived to change that.Rather than creating another commercial development, the vision was to establish a destination where culture, commerce, hospitality, and community could coexist—transforming Hue into a vibrant 24-hour lifestyle city while celebrating the diverse cultures connected by the Mekong River. The ambition was not simply to build a place people visit, but to create a destination people remember.
The ChallengeThe project introduced a unique branding challenge. How do you create one recognizable destination brand while allowing seven distinct cultural identities to exist under a single master vision? Each of the seven streets represents a different Mekong-region country, complete with its own architecture, decorative language, retail experiences, and cultural atmosphere.Without a carefully designed identity system, the destination risked becoming visually fragmented—seven disconnected experiences rather than one memorable place. The solution required more than a logo.It demanded a comprehensive identity system capable of balancing consistency with diversity.
Brand StrategyThe brand was built around one central idea:Many cultures. One destination.Instead of allowing every street to compete for attention, the master brand serves as the unifying thread connecting every visitor experience. The identity system provides a consistent visual foundation while giving each district the flexibility to express its own architectural character, local traditions, color palettes, graphic motifs, and storytelling. This creates an experience that feels both cohesive and endlessly discoverable.Visitors experience one destination—but seven cultural journeys.
Visual Identity
The identity was designed to reflect movement, discovery, and cultural exchange.Rather than relying solely on historical symbolism, the visual language balances heritage with contemporary tourism, positioning Phu My An as a destination that respects the past while looking confidently toward the future. The branding system extends seamlessly across every customer touchpoint, including:Master brand identityLogo systemColor paletteTypographyGraphic languageBrand guidelinesEnvironmental graphicsWayfinding and directional signageRetail storefront identitiesBusiness cardsFlyers and brochuresEvent promotionsShopping bagsPrice tagsRestaurant collateralDigital marketing assetsSocial media templatesVisitor information materialsEvery application was designed to strengthen recognition while maintaining flexibility across multiple retail categories and cultural themes.
Creating Seven Destinations Within One
One of the project's defining features was the development of a scalable sub-brand architecture. Each themed street received its own visual expression inspired by the identity of its respective country—through patterns, materials, typography, color, iconography, and environmental graphics—while remaining unmistakably part of the Phu My An ecosystem. The result is a branding system that encourages exploration. As visitors move from one district to another, the experience continually evolves without losing its sense of place.
Beyond Retail
Phu My An was never envisioned as a shopping center. It was designed as a living urban destination.Public parks, children's playgrounds, cultural gathering spaces, restaurants, entertainment venues, and upper-floor residences combine to create a neighborhood that remains active long after traditional business hours. With apartments and Airbnb accommodations integrated above retail, the district encourages visitors to extend their stay, increasing both tourism spending and community vitality. The brand therefore needed to communicate more than commerce—it needed to represent a lifestyle.
My Role
As Lead Brand Designer, I was responsible for developing the complete identity ecosystem for Phu My An—from strategic positioning through execution across both print and environmental applications. My responsibilities included:Brand discovery and researchNaming support and positioningBrand strategyLogo designVisual identity systemBrand guidelinesMarketing collateralSignage and wayfindingRetail graphicsEnvironmental brandingPrint production assetsPromotional campaignsMerchandise and packagingDigital brand assetsThe objective was to create a flexible design system capable of growing alongside the development while preserving a strong and recognizable brand across every customer touchpoint.
Outcome
Phu My An demonstrates how strategic branding can shape not only perception, but place.By creating a unified identity that embraces multiple cultures, the project transforms a commercial development into a destination with emotional resonance and long-term value.More than a collection of shops and streets, Phu My An establishes a new cultural landmark for Hue—one that celebrates regional diversity, encourages exploration, supports local businesses, and contributes to the continued evolution of Central Vietnam's tourism economy. The result is a brand designed not simply to attract visitors, but to become part of the future identity of Hue itself.
